Carbs aren’t the enemy!

If you’re a millennial, it’s likely that you were raised in a society that vilified carbs. Want to lose weight? Cut carbs. Carbs are the enemy. Low-carb or no-carb diets. You’ve heard those all, right?

Turns out, carbs aren’t the enemy, but the quality and quantity might be! Carbohydrates are one of the three main macronutrients that fuel our bodies, and are so incredibly important. It’s just that over time with the massive changes to the types of food we as humans eat, carbohydrates as we know them are pasta, bread, tortillas… also known as low-quality, refined carbohydrates, and consumption of these often displace the other two important macronutrients our bodies need: protein and fat. This is actually one of the biggest issues that can be detrimental to our bodies functioning optimally; for many people (bar elite athletes, etc…), they’re eating too many (refined) carbohydrates, and often at the expense of other macronutrients. For most people, carbs should not be the star of the show at mealtimes, but a side player. The same goes for when many people try to lose weight, they cut carbs, when in reality, they would be better off changing the types of carbs they’re eating, and just cutting their total caloric intake.

Studies have shown that many women’s bodies would be and feel healthier if their intake of carbohydrates was lower than the suggested 45-65% of calories, and consuming more like 15-30% of calories from carbs!

A huge thank you to Real Food For Fertility by Lilly Nichols and Lisa Hendrickson-Jack for spreading this important information!
