Food is [literally] medicine

Today I learned that in the case of pre-diabetes, medical nutrition therapy with a registered dietitian nutritionist can have a better clinical outcome for a patient than medication could(!); the more frequent the visits, the greater the improvements in metabolic and physical measurements for a patient. Working with a dietitian halted the progression for those who had pre-diabetes to a full-blown disease, and also aided those who were obese or overweight and in danger of pre-diabetic avoid this outcome.

I mean, how is this not being talked about more?! I found it so amazing that food (and movement!) is literally medicine. Right now, 1 in 3 Americans over the age of 65 are diabetic. This number is staggering, and it’s growing. How many lives could be changed with preventative measures in the form of taking better care of ourselves?

There is a notion that eating healthy means eating like a rabbit, or that healthy food doesn’t taste good. It’s time for that to change!
